A NIFTY calendar design by Okehampton Chamber of Trade is earning praise from as far as Yorkshire.

The Year Planner 2000 is the latest project by the chamber to promote local food for local people.

The A2 sized planner is farmers' market inspired with a map of the farmers' markets in Devon and Cornwall, lists of seasonal fruits and vegetables and a laminated scribble pad for notes and shopping lists.

Two thousand year planners have been produced and 500 have been sold already in the first two weeks of going on sale.

They can be purchased for £1.99 from the Okehampton OK office.

Derek Godfrey-Brown, who is behind the project, said he had had several enquiries including one from Leeds Metropolitan Council wanting to know if the chamber could design it a similar one.

Other farmers' markets in Devon and Cornwall have also thanked the chamber for promoting them.

'It is nice to know the year planner has gone so far around the country,' said Mr Godfrey-Brown.

'We are trying to encourage appreciation of the seasonality of food and also educate people about the farmers' markets.
