DARTMOOR prisoners have forged links with Trengweath nursing home in Plymouth, which are for profoundly disabled children.
And as a first Christmas present they have donated £2,500 to the home, and two Christmas trees.
The prison has made a three-year deal with Trengweath to generate as much money as possible from prisoners' contributions to buy items requested by the management at the home.
Director of Regimes at Dartmoor, Roger Brown, said: 'Everyone benefits from this arrangement. Trengweath gets valuable funding and the prisoners, many of whom have children themselves, feel they are putting something back into the community.
'Staff here also have a superb fund-raising reputation. They want to get involved so this is a real prison community initiative.'
The first cheque was presented to the management at Trengweath at the childrens' Christmas party.
Trenweath is open 50 weeks a year, 24 hours a day, to help children in great need. It is one of six schools run by SCOPE, the UK's larget charity working with disabled people.
