A 39-year-old inmate was found dead in his cell at Dartmoor Prison on Monday.

Staff at the Princetown jail found Liverpudlian Stephen Badaj hanged in his single cell at 1.47pm.

A spokesman from the prison service said: ?Every attempt was made to resuscitate him, and paramedics were called, but he was pronounced dead at 3.30pm.?

He said the inmate had not been on suicide watch and there had been no prior indication that the incident would occur.

Mr Badaj was serving five years and six months for burglary, and had been sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court in June 2002.

His death will now be investigated, as with all custodial deaths since April this year, by the Prisons Ombudsman Stephen Shaw.
