A TEENAGER from Lamerton Pony Club will represent Great Britain at a top international tetrathlon championship in America this July.

Daniel Preece, 16, from St Giles on the Heath, has been selected as one of the top five male tetrathletes in his age group in the country — the event combines the disciplines of shooting, running, swimming and horse-riding.

The competition will be held over two days, with shooting and swimming first, and running and riding — which Daniel feels are his strongest events — on the next day.

'I am looking forward to it. It gives me something to train that bit harder for,' he said.

Daniel said he was hoping he could fight for a place in the top three, but said the shooting round would be unpredictable.

'It's all down to the shooting, that's what can change it,' he said.

The team will go to Colorado to take part in the championships, before heading back to Virginia for another competition, during their two week stateside trip.

Daniel said he also hoped to do some sight-seeing while he was in America, with a visit to Washington planned.

The Great Britain team will compete against teams from the USA, Canada and Ireland.

Daniel won his place in the team at a selection course in Warwickshire College recently, where he was selected among the elite five to make up the British team from a field of fifteen.

Daniel says he practices most days, and tries to keep a balanced training schedule between the four disciplines.

Daniel has been competing in tetrathlon events for the last five years, he was a member of the Lamerton boys team which won a national championship two years ago.

At 16, Daniel is among the youngest tetrathletes in the 16-20 age group in which he competes.
