PLANS are shaping up for Callington's first Mayfest with dancing and entertainment all day, the highlight being the fantastic Furry Dance, composed especially for the town.

Workshops have begun for local musicians and aspiring dancers to learn the tune and simple dance routine, plus traditional Cornish dances.

Mayfest, the revival of Callington's May celebrations that have not taken place for more than 30 years, will be held on Saturday, May 11 and as many people as possible are being encouraged to join in the fun.

Two new portable maypoles have been constructed and are now available for groups to start practising as this is expected to be another crowd-puller.

Anyone who would like to be involved in the parade and street dancing or be a musician on May 11 can go along to the workshops in Callington Town Hall on April 6, April 13 and May 4, all at 10am.

The furry dance, which organisers would like to equal the Helston Flora Dance one day, will start at 12.30pm at the Saltash Road Car Park and process along Saltash Road into New Road and Fore Street. These roads will be closed for the afternoon and marshalling for the event will be provided by Callington Lions and Rotary clubs.

Dancing will be led by Callington Town Band, Calstock Rubber Band and other musicians from Callington and the surrounding area.

There will be displays of Morris dancing as well as schoolchildren from Callington, Stoke Climsland, Harrow-barrow, Delaware and Coads Green dancing around the new maypoles outside the town hall and in Fore Street.

People from Callington's twin town of Guipavas will also be joining in the fun and performing their Breton dances in the afternoon.

Cornish dancing will later take place in New Road and Fore Street and these will be simple dances, such as the Serpent Dance, which everyone can join in, with or without a partner.

As the street entertainment dies down a band will strike up in the Bull's Head courtyard where there will also be a mini beer festival. The town hall will be open during the afternoon for light refreshments served by Callington WI.

Cornish band Skillywidden will lead a dance in the town hall which will be the finale to the day. Tickets, £8 and £4 for under 18s, can be reserved online from [email protected]">[email protected] or by phoning 01579 384509. They will also be available soon from the town hall.
