ONE teacher from West Devon has been sharing his expertise online for free to help students continue their education while schools are closed due to coronavirus, writes Lindsay Turpin.
Schools were closed on March 20 for the foreseeable future to curb the outbreak of the virus.
Andrew Bruff is an English teacher with a YouTube channel where he makes videos on GCSE English language and literature: poetry, Shakespeare, novels, plays, exam techniques and more. He has been conducting this way of learning full-time for five years and has 50-million views and 257,00 subscribers on YouTube.
His videos were usually posted weekly but while the schools are closed Andrew will upload a daily video from Monday to Friday and will create worksheets to accompany the videos for free. Launched last Monday (March 23) Andrew hopes his innovative idea will help keep ‘some stability’ in these uncertain times.
‘As a child, I grew up in a poor neighbourhood, in a poor family and went to a tough inner city school,’ he said.
‘I am driven by the belief that the quality of the education you receive should not depend on where you live, which school you attend, or how much money your parents have.
‘With YouTube, educational videos like mine are accessible to everyone, free of charge. As a platform it is a great equaliser. Now that schools have closed, I want to help offer some of that stability that regular education offers.’
