OKEHAMPTON Cycle Club summer time series began on the ten mile course tracing the old A30 road from Bridestowe to Lewdown and back. With a dry but humid evening a field of 11 cyclists from Okehampton and Tavistock turned up to put their fitness to the test against the clock. Andy Retter was fastest on the evening, clocking a time of 26 minutes 09 seconds, followed by Dan Worth on 27.48 and Mike Cory in third on 28.58. Other times: J Davies, 26.09; A Bowyer, 29.46; A Carling, 29.58; Jacky Rice, 29.59; T Bridgman, 30.07; N Williams, 32.18; M Chave, 33.12 and S Perrett, 35.28. If you are interested in cycling and want further information about the club and its events call in and see Darren at Okehampton Cycles. Last Thursday the second event took place and Daniel Worth clocked the fastest time of 27.47 with Mike Cory coming second on 28.35. Full result: D Worth 27.47; M Cory 28.35; T Bridgman 29.05; M Deacon 30.45; Jacky Rice 30.48; M Chave 32.08; S Perrett 32.30; A Retter 34.41. Unfortunately Andy Retter pulled up with an injury and had to retire. A number of club members took part in the recent Dartmoor Classic 100 mile cycle event. The route took them over some of the hilliest roads on and around Dartmoor which, coupled with it being a blisteringly hot day made it a tough gruelling day's cycling. Congratulations to everyone who completed the course. OKCC finishing times: T Bridgman 7.45.21; G Sprague 7.45.24; P Battershill 7.51.50; A Bowyer 8.04.20; P Haygarth 8.15.01. On the same day club members Jacky and Mike Rice took part in the Exeter Triathlon and again the hot day made it a demanding event. Happily Jacky's efforts were rewarded when she was clocked as the third overall fastest female competitor and took the first in her age group prize. Last Sunday saw Tony Johnston, Jacky Rice and Mike Cory taking part in the 15.6 time trial hosted by St Budeaux cycle club at Kelly Bray. Jacky took the fastest lady prize with a time of 45.06.
