OKEHAMPTON Cycle Club held its second open ten mile time trial last Wednesday evening. Despite heavy rain through the early part of the day which brought into question whether the event would go ahead, conditions improved drying out the roads and allowing 36 competitors from all over the South West to converge at Sourton Village Hall and take part. The course starts on the A30 dual carriageway 2.4 miles west of Sourton and continues towards Launceston before turning at the Stowford Cross slip road and rejoining the eastbound carriageway to the finish. It was a keenly contested event with the winning time posted by Nick Harwood (N Devon Wheelers) of 20.58, beating by a narrow margin the second placed rider Rex Facey (Chard Wheelers) on 21.15. Of the Okehampton club members taking part Steve Podd was the fastest clocking 22.23 which also placed him sixth over all and the fastest veteran of the night. At the post-race prize giving club chairman Robert Szembek thanked everyone for participating, giving special thanks to the event organiser Tony Johnston, the timekeepers, marshals, ladies providing refreshments and friends of the cycle club who helped to make the event a success. As well as holding their own Summer time trial series on Wednesday evenings the club will be holding one further open 10 miles time trial event on the evening of Wednesday July 26.
