LAST Thursday saw the final event of the Okehampton Cycling Club summer time trial series on the old A30 road from Bridestowe to Lewdown and back.

Despite heavy rain for most of the day it turned out to be a dry evening and an excellent entry of 17 cyclists turned up to try and finish the series on a high note with a fast time.

Guest rider Ray Retter of North Devon Wheelers was fastest on the night, clocking a time of 27 minutes 22 seconds, followed by Okehampton CC members Andy Bowyer on 27.55 and a third place for Tim Bridgman with 28.46.

Full results: R Retter 27.22; A Bowyer 27.55; T Bridgman 28.46; Jacky Rice 28.59; A Bellew 29.17; M Cory 29.18; M Chave 32.14; N Williams 33.04; P Parks 33.55; Rebecca Windemer 34.06; D Chrome 34.37; Nicki Deane-Simmons 35.12; R Yells 35.46; M Gunnell 35.49; A Bostock 38.18; Sharon Pitts did not finish; A Retter did not finish.

Race organiser Darren Bostock said: 'Commiserations to both Sharon Pitts and Andy Retter who were disappointed when a mechanical problem and puncture respectively deprived them from recording a finish time.

'Well done to participants Adrian Bellew, Robert Yells, Mike Gunnell riding their first time trial event and also Aidan Bostock and Rebecca Windemer who at 13 and 15 years old were the youngest riders. The club hopes to see them all taking part again in next year's time trial series.'

The trophy for the series points winner will be presented at the OKCC club annual dinner next January.

At the post race meeting Robert Szembek, the club chairman, said that it had been another very successful summer series with more local cyclists than ever participating this year. Thanks were conveyed to timekeeper Ian Dudley and marshal Tony Johnston for the time and effort that they put in to make it a successful series of events.
