WEST Devon people with disabilities, who have never cycled before, now have that opportunity thanks to a new initiative by Mencap.
The charity has funded the purchase of two bikes, specially adapted for people with disabilities.
Devon County Council's acclaimed Puzzle Tree service in Okehampton, which supports people with learning disabilities, were the first to try the bikes along the Grand Western Canal's cycle path, and the cyclists loved the new experience.
Abbotshood Cycle Hire at Halberton near Tiverton has different styles of adapted bike available, so they can be used by a range of people with disabilities.
There is an adult sized three-wheeled tricycle, and a strengthened Duet bike fitted with an adult sized seat at the front, allowing a supporter to do the pedalling. The Duet bike has safety straps, and a mounting block can help people get on and off the bike.
Jennifer Howard, Jean Vincent and Shawn Setter trialled the bikes, supported by carers from Puzzle Tree, fulfilling lives service in Okehampton.
Shawn, who does not speak, tried the bike with the seat on the front, and thoroughly enjoyed the new experience.
Jennifer rode the tricycle, using it easily, for ten miles. Her family were amazed she rode so far.
She said: 'They have a great range of bikes and all ages and needs are catered for. It was really good fun and enjoyable. You could really see Shawn was happy too, it was great.'
'I rode so hard that I was very puffed and red, but I felt really good. The next day my legs ached, but I would love to do this again soon, please.'
Nigel Cuthbert from the bike hire shop, said: 'We're really pleased to have these bikes in for anyone to use, and grateful to Mencap for the funding. It was great to see the guys from the Puzzle Tree service enjoying themselves so much.'
Cllr Hugo Barton, Devon County Council's executive member for adult and community services, said: 'This is exactly the sort of initiative that we welcome. Our service supports people to do a whole range of things that they want to do in their local community.'
The bikes are available for hire, at £2 per bike, from Abbotshood Cycle Hire at Halberton near Tiverton.
