CONSTRUCTION of a further section of cycle path including the seven-arch Wallabrook viaduct is in the pipeline for Tavistock.
The proposal has been recommended for planning consent by Devon County Council.
It means the present cycle route will be diverted from the minor road near Wilminstone onto the old Okehampton to Tavistock railway line.
At the southern end a new access onto Old Exeter Road will be formed by ramping down to the level of the infilled track and a gate would be provided into the grounds of Kelly College.
In his report, environment director Edward Chorlton said there had been one letter of objection from residents whose property backs onto the disused railway.
They are concerned about security and potential danger of the access to the cycle route which is near a blind bend in the lane.
Mr Chorlton said: 'They have also questioned the need for the scheme, bearing in mind the small number of cyclists who currently take advantage of the signed route and the benefits of providing a mere half mile of off-road cycle/walkway.'
But Mr Chorlton said there would be a warning sign on approach to the cycle path, which would provide cyclists with an off-road alternative to using the narrow lane.
'There is currently nothing to prevent members of the public from gaining access to the former railway line to the rear of the properties and it is considered more likely that potential intruders would be deterred if the route is in regular use,' Mr Chorlton added.
A survey of Wallabrook viaduct has revealed 'significant costs' will be involved in upgrading the structure to a satisfactory standard.
Mr Chorlton predicted external funding would be required although Sustrans would be responsible for maintenance of the viaduct.
Work started on another section of railway between Kilworthy Park and the bridge in Old Exeter road earlier this year.
