SHOPPERS got more than they bargained for at a Callington supermarket  – and it was all for charity.

Tesco customers were greeted by music from Callington Town Band and balloons made by children's entertainer Mr Bamboozle. They were also encouraged to try their competitive skills on a rowing machine by Calstock rower Rosie Greaves and pick up a used paperback, as part of the store's Charity Fun Day.

'It was really fun!' said Rosie, who plans to row solo 3,000 miles across the Atlantic in December 2013 to raise money for local charity CHICKS.

'We raised a lot of money to be split between Cancer Research, CHICKS and Rosie's Row.

'Four Tesco employees battled it out on the rowing machine to see who could row the furthest in a minute. Matt Wyman was the winner, with an impressive 375m! Not only did he beat his colleagues, he also won overall, meaning he gets to go on a cool kayaking trip, kindly sponsored by the Mount Batten Centre.'

Balloon man Mr Bamboozle, alias Steve Washington, said: "I did not leave until 7pm — people just kept coming! A really big thank you to Tesco's and all the customer support in buying the balloon models to help two really great causes, CHICKS and Cancer Research UK. Also the very generous donations were really appreciated. It was a fantastic day and I would like to thank all those involved.'

Callington Town Band secretary Shirley Morse said the band was delighted to have been asked to help Tesco raise money for Cancer Research UK.
