SWIMMING trophies, which had been gathering dust in a cupboard at the town council chambers, have been given a new lease of life, thanks to an article in the Times.

A member of staff unearthed a bag containing several cups and shields during a clean-out.

Several trophies were associated with Tavistock Swimming Club and thought to have been left when Bannawell Street pool closed.

After reading about the cups, club member Debbie Mills was able to identify some of the names inscribed on them, using old club minutes.

The trophies have now been returned to the swimming club, which meets at the Meadowlands pool, and will be presented to worthy competitors in the future.

A cup and shield relating to Tavistock Chess Club were unearthed at the same time as the swimming trophies, and it is hoped a suitable home can be found for these.
