East Devon Senior Cup quarter final Exmouth Town 3 Okehampton Argyle 4 THIS was an excellent win for Argyle against a team two places above them in the league. Okehampton started off playing attacking football and could easily have been three up in the first ten minutes. Having squandered these early chances, Argyle allowed Exmouth back into the game. Following a dubious free kick, Exmouth took the lead after a mix up in the Okehampton defence. Exmouth played a very physical brand of football, but Okehampton persisted with their attractive attacking style and it was no surprise when Robbie Sandercock broke through on the left and slotted in the equaliser. Unfortunately the Okehampton defence then went to sleep and allowed Exmouth to regain the lead with a well taken goal. This was a signal for Okehampton to raise their game again and before half time a clinical finish from Adam Mortimer saw the teams go in level. Okehampton started the second half with a bang and a great move saw Robbie Sandercock beat his defender and crash home a stunning shot from the edge of the box. The game then continued at a hectic pace, but Argyle always looked to have the edge, and it was no surprise when Adam Mortimer used his pace to beat the Exmouth defence and crash home a great goal. At 4-2 the Okehampton fans thought they could relax, but once again the players lost concentration and Exmouth immediately pulled one back. Then it was 15 minutes of finger biting for the fans, as Argyle seemed less fit than their opponents and had to indulge in some desperate defending to stay in front. This they managed to do and the final whistle brought both relief and elation for the hard working players and managers and their loyal band of travelling fans. This was a great performance by Argyle and all the players deserve credit, but special mention is due to the ever reliable Mike Vernon and Tim Williams at the back, the incredible work rate of Robbie Miller and James Williams in midfield and the formidable threat posed by Adam Mortimer up front. l Next week in the Devon and Exeter premier league Okehampton Argyle are at home to Clyst Valley, kick-off 3pm.
