A SCHOOL crossing patrol is desperately needed to help hundreds of primary school children and college students in Callington.

The patrol officer for the school crossing patrol on Launceston Road near Callington Community College is on sick leave and a temporary relief cover is being sought.

Members of Callington Town Council said at a meeting recently that children from the Kelly Bray area had to cross the A388 four times to get to the primary school.

Portreeve Karen Gold, who works at the community college, said: 'It is vital we have a school crossing patrol at this location on Launceston Road. It is a really busy road and there is a huge amount of youngsters that go from Callington and Kelly Bray both ways in the mornings and afternoon to get to both the primary school and the community college.

'It is really, really dangerous and we have been without a school crossing patrol there since the beginning of January. We hope someone will come forward to fill this vacancy as soon as possible.'

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said schools in Callington had been made aware that the site was, at present, unpatrolled and had been asked to inform parents.
