A LARGE wooden cross to celebrate the year 2000 could be erected near the childrens' play area in Moretonhampstead.

Dartmoor National Park Authority planners are to recommend granting permission to site the cross, nearly five and a half metres in height, on the edge of a field near St Andrew's Church.

The Authority says the site was chosen away from the churchyard on the basis the cross was for Christianity as a whole, and not for any particular church.

Planning officer Katy Graham said: 'The cross, although high, will be adjacent to two trees at the edge of the field.

'It is considered that any impact the proposal may have would be reduced by the proximity of the trees.'

But although the parish council have not objected to the scheme, other residents disagree.

An objector living nearby was concerned about the visual impact of the cross and thought it would be an invitation to vandals.

Others have objected about the lack of consultation regarding the cross, the fact there is already a cross in the churchyard, and that it would disrupt the skyline on the approach to Moretonhampstead.

A decision is likely to be made at the planning meeting in Bovey Tracey tomorrow (Friday).
