HATHERLEIGH Cricket Club's Colts teams have had a very successful season with the U16 side winning the Reg Rawle Cup, defeating Filleigh by 28 runs at Westward Ho!

Hatherleigh batted first and Filleigh struck early with Graham Bryant being caught with the score on 8. Ollie Wickett and Simon Gillespie put on exactly 100 for the second wicket with Gillespie making 46 and Wickett 42.

When these went, James Corry carried on the momentum with a quick 13. 36 extras took the final score to 142 for 5 with Alex Boyd (2 for 21 off 4 overs) and James Palmer (3 for 12 off 4) being the only successful Filleigh bowlers.

Hatherleigh started well with the ball, Michael Cooper taking 3 for 16, Josh Stacey 1 for 27 and Simon Gillespie 1 for 11 to reduce Filleigh to 42 for 5 after 8 overs.

The bowlers relaxed a little but always had first team opening bowler Ollie Wickett in reserve. He was not needed as Filleigh finished on 114 for 7 off their allotted 20 overs. Only Stu Hill with 43 put up much resistance and Hatherleigh were able to work a comfortable victory.

Simon Gillespie was named man of the match.

This rounded off a good season with the U16 team finishing runners-up in the Bob Whitburn Trophy losing the final to a strong Barton side after defeating Exeter in the semi-final.

The U15 side finished equal top of the North Devon League and reached the quarter-final of the Devon League Competition.

The U13s went one further in the Devon League by reaching the ssemi-final where they lost to a strong United services side who fielded many of the current Devon squad. They finished runners-up in the North Devon League.

Thanks go to Kerry Wedd for his continued coaching and managerial efforts in a difficult season. Thanks also to Alan Jones and to Paul Cooper, Charlie Inniss and Richard Jones for their work with the U12s and U11s. The U12 team finished runners-up in the Graham Harris Trophy and the U11s have only lost one league match this season and boast the current Devon U11 captain.

Next season will hopefully prove to be a successful one and training will start again in the new year. Anyone interested in playing or helping can contact club secretary Richard Tidball on 01837 811188.
