FIRE crews were called to a fire in a large van which had spread to a nearby house at Manor Gardens in Horrabridge last Tuesday week.

A crew from Yelverton attended and one from Tavistock were called for. Crews requested a third crew from Tavistock.?The fire involved a large van severely damaged by the blaze, which spread to a two-storey domestic property.

Crews set to work with two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets, and the Red Cross Fire and Emergency Support Services team attended.

All persons were clear of the property involved in the fire and a fourth appliance from Bere Alston and the water bowser from Plympton were requested for additional water. The command vehicle from Greenbank with a support vehicle from Crownhill also attended. Crews also requested the attendance of the incident support unit from Ivybridge for additional lighting.

The number of breathing apparatus was increased to six as crews continued to damp down and turn over hotspots.

Seventy five per cent of the roof was severely damaged by fire and 75% of the remainder of the property was damaged by heat, smoke and water.

Four occupants were treated for smoke inhalation.

The care of the property was left in the hands of the occupant who was making arrangements to secure the roof. The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
