SIX West Devon restaurants are featured in a new good eating guide published by South West Tourism.

The 20-page Trencherman's Guide was launched this week to give the region's tourist industry 'a much needed boost'. Fifty thousand copies have been printed.

The West Devon restaurants are Gidleigh Park and 22 Mill Street, both in Chagford, The Horn of Plenty, Tavistock, the Dartmoor Inn at Lydford, Percy's Country Hotel and Restaurant, Virginstow, and the Arundell Arms, Lifton.

South West Tourism Head of Operations Simon Bradley said: 'At this time it is vital that people across the UK get the message loud and clear that the South West is open for business, and positive messages like the Trencherman's guide are just what we need. This is a very popular guide which is all about quality and focusses on the unique culinary appeal of the South West.

'The exceptional number of top quality places to eat that we have here in the region is truly amazing and a great attribute to the tourism industry.'

The introduction to the guide was written by national restaurant critic Alice Thomson who married a Devonian.

She said: 'The larder of England doesn't need any fancy fripparies when it's got the best raw ingredients in the country. The best chefs are heading for the western frontier to make their names.'

The front cover features a venison dish prepared by Percy's Country House Hotel.

The guide also gets a world-wide audience by going live on South West Tourism's consumer internet site at http://www.westcountrynow.com">www.westcountrynow.com.
