A CAR driver was treated for shock on Sunday evening after he collided with a pylon carrying high voltage electric cables.

Callington fire chief Roger Denley said the man had been very lucky to escape uninjured, but it had been a tense time for everyone while they were waiting for SWEB to turn off the current.

'It wasn't very nice sitting around waiting when you can see sparks playing around the car in the gloom — you feel completely helpless,' he said.

The incident took place at Windy Bridge on the Delaware Road between St Ann's Chapel and the Hingston Down Quarry at about 6.30pm on Sunday.

The power lines came down over the car after the collision, but Mr Denley said the driver was all right so long as he stayed in the vehicle, as the tyres were insulating him.

When the danger was removed the man was rescued and taken to Derriford Hospital, where he was treated for shock.
