A WEEK of arts and crafts workshops culminating in a catwalk show and an exhibition took place in South Zeal last week with 78 participants, both children and adults.

Crafty Capers, which is financially supported by South Tawton Parish Council, is run by the Sticklepath Fireshow Committee and involved 19 volunteers who put in 106 sessions through the week.

It all took place in a marquee on the recreation ground.

There were various categories for the catwalk show including representing a Mr Man or Little Miss, designing a totally bonkers outfit, symbolising something you would see in the sky, characterising a creature/alien from science fiction, depicting an indoor game and creating a garment from waste.

The puppet making and costume making techniques learned are those used for the famous Sticklepath Fireshow in November but there is no stipulation on age for Crafty Capers, so children under ten can take part.

Hilary Gillespie from the committee said the workshops and catwalk show were a great success putting creativity to the fore.

'We saw huge puppets on the catwalk wearing hand-made clothes and there were some really wacky outfits,' she said.

'Some people decorated puppets, some embroidered pictures out of wool, others made scenes out of shoeboxes and masks.

'There was a whole range of activities and the younger ones were accompanied by their parents.

There was a lot of co-operation between the children and it was a great week.'
