LAST weekend Okehampton RFC?s U15 and U13 teams embarked on a two day tour to West Cornwall where they enjoyed the hospitality of both Falmouth and Penryn Rugby Clubs. With the tour theme being ?the wild west? both teams, parents and supporters came suitably attired in a fine display of Cowboy and Indian costumes! On the Saturday the Cowboy U13s played a keenly contested game at Penryn and came away with an excellent 15-0 victory. The Indian U15s travelled a further five miles down the road where they were entertained by Falmouth. A relatively inexperienced Falmouth team gave an excellent account of themselves against the Okes but ultimately had to give best to their more experienced guests with the tourists running out 36-5 winners. A brace of tries from Liam Walker was supported by further scores from Luke Wonnacott, Tom Chisholm and a particularly fine individual effort from the improving Johnny Grayling. Fly half Rob North slotted three conversions. After enjoying some excellent Cornish hospitality at both clubs the entourage ? 76 in total ? travelled back to Newquay where they enjoyed an evening of ten pin bowling and partying at the Porth Lodge Hotel. On the Sunday the U15s were again in action against a very capable side at Penryn. This proved a highly competitive and committed game. Both teams had the opportunity to win the game but excellent last ditch defence maintained a stalemate with the home side having the better of exchanges in the first half. This situation was reversed in the second half when the back row of Harding, Wonnacott and Harding began to link well with scrum half Radnor to drive play deep into Penryn?s 22 area. Constant pressure was matched by several last ditch tackles to prevent the Okes taking what at this stage in the game would have been a deserved lead. The game, however, swung Penryn?s way and they in turn applied the pressure to the Okes? line where again committed and dogged defence won the day with prop Paul Thomas in particular winning a regular stream of turnover at the ruck and maul to allow Rob North to clear the line with some good touch kicking. The game finished a 0-0 draw, a score that shouldn?t detract from an excellent and keenly contested game with some great play from both teams. The tour was a great success and proved a fitting finale to another excellent season for the U15s. Several notable victories are evidence that the side continues to improve and develop. Two members of the side ? John Radnor and Rob North ? were selected for Devon, but in their absence the spirit and improving strength of the side ensured continuity with some excellent performances and results. The tour wraps up the regular season for the juniors at Okehampton with the U15s having one remaining game against the touring Wolverhampton side next weekend. The club?s presentation evening takes place tomorrow (Friday) at the clubhouse at 7pm.
