THOSE who want to get creative and get their hands dirty are being invited to take part in a free felt-making project.
Once Upon a Yurt is a project being run by Claire Packer from the Wet Felting Company in Yelverton, that is open to everyone from four years old upwards, to create a felt cover for a yurt — a structure commonly used by the Mongolians as a home but becoming increasingly popular in this country as an alternative to a tent.
Individuals, schools, colleges, universities and community groups are invited to be involved in the project, creating a series of decorative felt panels which will be attached together to form the cover.
Each panel will depict a moment in local history, for example, Sir Frances Drake, the moor and the invasion of Tavistock and Lydford by the Vikings.
As each panel is made it will be offered for display at the place it was made for a short period of time so that friends and family can view it. Once the entire cover has been made, it will be displayed at a number of venues.
Those involved do not have to be good at art or craft at all and there is no charge to be involved with the Once Upon A Yurt project, unless those participating have never done felt-making before. If this is the case there will be a basic felt-making workshop before hand for a charge of £6 per person.
Anyone who would be interested in taking part can request a registration pack by emailing [email protected]">[email protected] or contact the Wet Felting Company on 01822 859157.
