PARENTS and children from the Okehampton area are reaping the rewards of a free class which helps parents gain confidence and rediscover the joys of parenthood.
The 'Incredible Years' parenting course is being offered free of charge to all families with children under 5, and helps parents understand and communicate with their children, as well as supporting them in dealing with different behaviour.
The 14-week programme has been run at Okehampton Sure Start Children's Centre, which is managed by children's charity Barnado's South West on behalf of Devon County Council, in partnership with Hatherleigh Sure Start Children's Centre.
Last Wednesday saw the latest cohort of parents receive their certificates from chair of Devon County Council, Christine Marsh.
The children were also presented with a book recording some of the activities they have taken part in in the centre's creche, where they are looked after while their parents take part in the course.
Barnado's project worker Rachel Hirsch said: 'The course looks at basic relationships and encourages families to learn new ways of dealing with difficult situations, as well as sharing their own experiences.
'The aim is to provide key skills in supporting children when they reach crucial developmental stages, preparing them for pre-schools and schools.
'Families say it not only gives them greater confidence and the skills to tackle a variety of potential problems, but it also helps them to rediscover the joys of being a parent.'
The course has been so successful that there is currently a waiting list to enrol, although the course is being offered across the area and further programmes will be announced shortly.
Barnado's children's services manager Jenny Coleman said: 'We are delighted that so many parents want to give their children the best possible start in life.
'Children's centres provide free and friendly support to all families with under-5s and we always offer a warm welcome.'
Cllr Andrea Davis, Devon County Council's cabinet member for children and young people's health and wellbeing, said: 'Parenting can be one of the toughest jobs in the world, as well as the most rewarding.
'We're really pleased that our children's centres are offering such a diverse range of opportunities for local families.'
Okehampton Sure Start Children's Centre is located at the Ockment Centre on North Street.
