OKEHAMPTON town councillors have been asked to identify their priorities for future minor highways schemes in the town ? but they have been told an Oaklands Drive link road is not a Devon County Council priority at present.
Brian George, deputy local services officer for Devon County Council, attended the town council?s policy and resources meeting last week to set out the council?s aim of consulting with parishes and town councils on small highways works around each locality.
He told councillors: ?I am very aware of the desire for an Oaklands Drive link road, but that is beyond the scope of this scheme.?
Mr George said the county council was looking at small projects, particularly those which could encourage walking, cycling and the use of public transport.
He provided a copy of a map of Okehampton on which councillors will be able to highlight the priorities as they see them, in consultation with local people over the next few months.
Mr George said there would be a limited amount of money which could be spent on minor road schemes across a wide area.
?We won?t be able to deliver everyone?s aspirations, but we want to hear what parishes think,? he said.
When pressed by councillors on the need for a link road, Mr George said: ?The council would probably say the case is still not strong enough to promote a scheme which could cost as much as £3-million, at this stage.?
