CALLINGTON Community College has scored highly in its latest Ofsted inspection with all areas graded above average and some exceptional.
Inspectors said Callington was a good school where students exhibited excellent behaviour and very positive attitudes. The new headteacher and leadership team were committed to ensuring that the school met the needs and interests of all students.
Inspectors awarded the highest possible grades in the quality of the curriculum, how well pupils were cared for and supported and students' personal development and well being.
The school's specialist status in sport and music had played an important part in raising the aspirations and achievements of students, said inspectors, and the wide participation of students in sport through the 'personal enhancement programme' had helped raise their self-esteem. Targets had been reached in both specialisms.
The quality of teaching and learning was good and mention was made of the training school which had allowed for rigorous lesson observations and programmes of professional development which all staff were involved in.
Since the last inspection, procedures had been put in place to develop greater consistency in monitoring and evaluation across all departments. However there was still some variation in students' achievement between subjects and the leadership team had rightly identified the need to improve the rigour of these procedures, the report said.
Inspectors highlighted the links with local schools ensuring that the transition for new students was effective, with regular visits by senior staff to schools and taster days for students. Parents were overwhelmingly supportive of the school.
Callington Community College was an 'international school' and had recently become recognised as a high performing specialist school for its work with gifted and talented students. In a letter to pupils from leading inspector Adrian Lyons it said: 'The curriculum is outstanding. It is organised so that you maximise your chances of success in Year 11.
But he added: 'Whilst we judge your school to be good, the leaders of the school are keen for it to become even better. We have asked them to check the work of all departments to try to make all subjects as good as the best.'
Headteacher Gary Lobbett said: 'I am delighted with the highly positive judgement by Ofsted inspectors and this recognition of the college's many outstanding achievements.'
