THE TAMAR VALLEY is being invaded by alien plants, according to a group dedicated to controlling the unwelcome visitors. The Tamar Valley Invasive Group, a partnership between English Nature, The Silvanus Trust and several other environmental organisations, has been monitoring and controlling Giant Hogweed along the Tamar and Tavy since 2001. More recently the group has extended its research to Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam which have colonised gardens throughout the Tamar area. To raise awareness about the problems that these troublesome species can create, TVIG are holding an educational day out at Morwhellham Quay where the best methods of controlling the plants will be discussed. The free open day on Tuesday April 26 starts at 10am and will finished by 3.30pm. Tea and coffee will be on offer throughout the day and the trust welcomes all landowners to come along and get involved in the project.
