ELECTIONS at national, borough/district and town/parish level are to be held on May 7. The political parties will ensure that at national and borough/district level there will be more candidates than seats available, resulting in contested elections. However, this may not be the case in the election for Okehampton Town Council. The last time the election for Okehampton Town Council was contested was in 2003. In the elections of 2007 and 2011 the number of candidates did not exceed the number of seats available so all were deemed 'elected', though 'returned unopposed' would be a more accurate description. The current Okehampton Town councillors, several of whom have served for ten years or more, fulfil their role diligently and conscientiously. Although town/parish councillors are entitled to an annual allowance, Okehampton town councillors have, to date, collectively declined the entitlement. Their only reward has been the satisfaction derived from serving the community. However, despite this creditable commitment by the current councillors, a contested election this May would, in my opinion, be in the best interest of both town and council. It would give the newly elected council a more democratic mandate and, if it resulted in new councillors being elected, bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the council chamber. Town/parish councils are the lowest tier of local government but they are the foundation on which borough/district and county councils rest. They are statutory consultees on planning and development matters and have an important role in ensuring that local opinions and needs are heard. Serving as a town councillor is at times very frustrating, but it is an interesting, vital and worthwhile commitment. I urge all eligible Okehampton residents, and especially those relatively new to the town, to seriously consider standing as a candidate for election to the town council. Nomination forms are available now and have to be returned by April 9. Charles Letchford Okehampton Town Councillor
