COMPLAINTS of youths driving recklessly and playing loud music in Okehampton's Simmons Park are to be addressed again by the town council.

West Devon Council's environmental health officer Ray Rattenbury has asked Okehampton Town Council to reconsider closing the park at night after receiving another complaint from a member of the public.

'Once again the complaint is about youths driving recklessly and carrying out handbrake turns in Simmons Park in the evenings,' he said.

'This activity is coupled with the playing of loud amplified music from their in-car entertainment systems.'

The town council has chosen not to lock the gate at night in the past because of evening activities going on at the Bowling Club and Swimming Pool.

'I fully appreciate the clubs have evening activities but perhaps an arrangement could be reached that the last out closes the gate or barrier,' added the officer.

'In my opinion as long as access to the park goes unrestricted this problem cannot be resolved.'

Although the issue has been raised with the police, town clerk John Winchester said last week that it was a problem for the town council to sort out not the police or environmental health.

'The best way to tackle this is to seek a meeting with the crime reduction officer and environmental health.

'It can then be discussed around the table and a solution proposed to the town council at a future date,' he said.
