A BEAUTY spot on Roborough Down is slowly becoming a popular place for fly-tippers to dump rubbish. Varieties of rubbish, including a fridge freezer have been dumped near Common Lane on Roborough Down, part of the Maristow Estate. David Butler, of Bere Alston, noticed the piles of rubbish on Roborough Down when he was driving to Plymouth last Thursday. He said: ?There was a fridge freezer there and a load of junk ? even a three-piece suite. The ponies were all around it, and their foals. ?It was such a shame to see something like that.? Maristow Estate manger Jo Hess said he saw the rubbish last Thursday and had noticed a slight increase in fly-tipping in recent weeks. He said: ?It?s disgraceful, it?s illegal, it?s dangerous, and it?s a burden on council tax payers who have to pay for the rubbish to be cleared. ?It?s dangerous to livestock and it spoils the amenity of the area.? West Devon Borough Council removed the rubbish last Thursday. Council spokesperson Alison Stoneham said: ?It?s a real blight on such a beautiful area in West Devon. ?These people don?t really understand what an effect it has on the area and the people who live there. ?At the end of the day it?s the council tax payers who have to pay the bill. ?There is no reason for it because we have regular refuse collections.? The Environment Agency advised that anyone who witnessed fly-tipping should keep their distance, but take down, if possible, the location, time, and description of the person and car involved.
