A NEW co-ordinator has been welcomed with open arms at the Okehampton District Community Transport Group. The group, one of the first in Devon, started in May 1990 with funding provided by Devon County Council and West Devon Borough Council. Volunteers at the group recently said goodbye and thank you to Sandra Hucker, who was the co- ordinator for seven years, and welcomed Sue Wonnacott. The service provides transport for the frail, elderly, and disabled people and those who are rurally isolated. All its services are 'door to door'. Its 'Ring and Ride' bus is on the road six days a week, Monday to Friday bringing people into Okehampton from the surrounding villages as well as picking them up in the town for shopping trips. On Saturdays it runs a 'Passenger Club' — going to destinations such as Sidmouth, Tavistock and Homeleigh Garden Centre. The timetable for the Ring and Ride service is: Monday: Chagford, Drewsteignton, Spreyton, South Zeal, Sticklepath; Tuesday: Winkleigh, Broadwoodkelly, Exbourne, Sampford Courtenay, North Tawton; Wednesday: Bridestowe, Lewdown, Sourton; Thursday: Hatherleigh, Highampton, Northlew, Folly Gate; Friday: Bratton Clovelly, Beaworthy, Halwill. Passengers are asked to ring by lunchtime the day before they wish to travel on the bus and at least 48 hours before they need a voluntary car. The group is currently recruiting new drivers trustees for its Community Car Service. Anyone who would like more information call Sue on 01837 55000 or visit her at The Ockment Centre.
