NORTH Tawton is following in the footsteps of Winkleigh and putting together a document which details how residents would like to see their town develop in terms of design.

The Village Design Statement is a nationwide initiative by the Countryside Agency to involve people in the planning process.

Many small towns and villages have produced their own design statements, including Winkleigh, which are referred to by local authorities when discussing planning applications.

Among the sorts of items included in the document will be preferred styles of windows, roof tiles, street lighting and seating.

The North Tawton group is currently at the electing members stage and Mike Fisher has taken on the role of secretary.

He said there would be 12 people involved in putting together the document but the views would be taken from as many residents as possible.

'We will get the school, local groups and residents involved because it is all about what the community wants,' he said. 'Hopefully we will produce something that is useful.'

He added that the overdevelopment of North Tawton was a concern and people did not want a mass volume of shoebox-type houses.

'It is important that we have buildings erected in a more traditional style and in keeping with what North Tawton already has.

'This village design statement will give the planning committee an idea of what the people of North Tawton would like and we hope members will take notice of it.'
