THERE was a good turnout to the latest film on the Tamar Valley Mining Landscapes shown at Bere Ferrers recently.

The film, by Tanya and Paul Morel, consisted of an unusual mix of film and sound recordings, exploring the mining heritage and tourism of West Devon and Cornwall.

The Morels had researched their subject thoroughly, drawing on the history of the Tamar Valley, the river, railway, market gardening and Morwellham's mines.

Its strength lay in interviews of local people who had lived and worked all their lives in this area of outstanding natural beauty — it was a celebration of the area and the generosity of spirit, sincerity, pride and downright love of their birthright.

Featured on film were Iris and John Snell, flower arranger, author and train enthusiast respectively and hairdresser Margaret Willmott, all from the Bere Peninsula.

The snapshot of life in the valley, past and present, showed residents had to be tough and resourceful to survive and prosper.

A raffle in aid of the Haiti appeal has also been held at Bere Ferrers Community Shop and Café.
