TAVISTOCK College is asking local business and community supporters to dig deep and help fulfil its ambition to install solar panels and cut its carbon footprint. The school needs to raise £20,000 in order to purchase and install sufficient solar panels to generate 'free' electricity and has turned to government-backed initiative Solar Schools for guidance and support in its efforts. Premises manager Linda Cole, who has been tasked with making the school more sustainable and cutting energy consumption, said: 'Solar Schools provides the school with a dedicated website. 'This includes a facility for online donations, where individuals and businesses can 'buy' a tile for the college's virtual roof.' Online donations are an effective way to achieve the fundraising target, and the school recently received a great boost when the Co-operative Community Fund donated £1,500, bringing the total raised to just under £4,300. Helen Salmon, Tavistock College principal, said: 'The installation of a solar array offers a fantastic opportunity for all the students in the college to learn about sustainable energy, and I would urge local businesses or community-minded individuals to make an online donation if they possibly can — it doesn't matter how big or small. We are happy to shout about any support we are given. 'This is a very exciting project for Tavistock College. 'Alongside understanding energy concerns and seeing how a practical solution can be put in place, students are also acquiring additional skills in the process of fundraising and conducting research for the project.' In addition to seeking support from business, students, staff and the PTA are holding a variety of fundraising events, which have so far included a fashion show, car boot sale and mufti day, and department events such as a summer concert and dining evening.   Details of all upcoming fundraising events are available on the college website.   'This is a chance to bring together the school and local community for one common purpose,' said Mrs Salmon.
