Following months of collaborative work with Feeding Devon and after receiving food to share amongst the community from Devon & Cornwall Food Action, the Horrabridge Love Your Neighbour initiative has secured a Community Food Hub for the village.

Every Wednesday from 2.30-4.00pm, a pop-up food store operates at Horrabridge Youth Club and is open to anyone who wishes to buy fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables, tinned foods and toiletries (for a donation). £15 food boxes can also be ordered. The aim of these stores is to reduce food waste and help feed individuals and families in the local area, predominantly those on low income and/or struggling to pay rising bills. Devon & Cornwall Food Action work directly with nearby food distributors to source food close to sell or use by dates which can then can be purchased at reduced prices compared to a retailer.

Ali Mansfield, Methodist pioneer, community outreach worker for Horrabridge and leader of the Love Your Neighbour initiative, has joined forces with Rachel Harrison-French from Community Kitchen Hub to bring the pop up store to the village. Ali said: ‘This is for people and families who are needing just a little extra support. Say a family have a huge bill one month, or their car breaks down or their house deperately needs repair work done. It’s important to let communities know that no matter what they’re going through, there is support out there.’

Janet Hearl is taking on the leadership of the pop up food store, along with Lizzie Horton and Paul and Kelly Wait. Anything that remains after each weekly pop up store, the Love Your Neighbour Initiative then purchase and cook as meals to give to people through the Community Freezer Project in Horrabridge.
