NEW allotments are to be set up in Calstock thanks to the efforts of a local community co-operative that promotes local produce in the Tamar Valley. Several weeks ago Tamar Grow Local appealed in the media for a suitable location for a community growing site and, soon after, local landowners Nigel and Jo Stevens stepped forward with a centrally located plot in the village. Jonathan Selman from Tamar Grow Local said: 'We are absolutely delighted to have come to an arrangement with Nigel and Jo Stevens to use this accessible south-facing hillside site with ideal growing conditions. 'We're currently finalising the details and exploring grant funding for the installation of a rabbit-proof fence and a water supply. 'Many of the homes in Calstock have little or no garden space, and we know that there are a number of households that would like access to an allotment, so a new community growing site is fantastic news for the village. We'll be getting local children involved too with a vegetable plot for the school on part of the land.' Cllr Margaret Allen, Caradon's District Council's local environment portfolio holder, said: 'People are much more interested in where their food comes from these days, and many are keen to source local produce. 'Growing your own is a great way to get some gentle exercise and unwind whilst ensuring that your food is as fresh and local as possible. 'The Tamar Valley was famous for its market gardens in days gone by, so it's especially satisfying to see new allotments being set up in this area.' Tamar Grow Local hopes to set up a co-operative arrangement for members of the site, which is common for many allotments. A site visit has been arranged for Saturday (May 10) to discuss details and listen to the views of local people. Anyone wishing to attend should meet at the junction of Church Hill and Church Lane in Calstock at 2.15pm or look for the sign on Church Hill. The site visit will start at 2.30pm.
