TAVISTOCK Area Support Services will be making a splash at Kelly College on February 14, when it launches its new swimming term for those over 55. The charity has been swimming with the local over 55s, many of who are isolated and disabled, at the college for nearly 20 years. Vera Jones, trustee and founder member of TASS, said that since February 1989, swimming has made a huge difference to many people over 55 through the benefit of exercise and socialisation. This is a group where non-swimmers can mix with other swimmers under the watchful eye of the college's pool manager Clare Short. Mrs Short said: 'We have a wonderful small group of swimmers who vary in ability but are all very keen to keep active. 'Swimming is a fantastic, non-weight bearing exercise, which works all the muscle groups without causing injury. It loosens stiff aching joints as well as helping the cardio-vascular system to keep strong. 'The group of swimmers we have are an extremely friendly bunch that come not only for the swimming but also for the social side too.'
