MEMBERS of Firefighters Fighting Cancer, with the assistance of a team from Cancer Research UK, are organising a cycle challenge across Dartmoor— they are looking for participants to enter the event on Sunday, June 7.

Entrants will be able to select from one of two courses of 25 and 50 miles. Each course starts in Plympton and follows the old railway track on to the moor and circles Burrator Reservoir, with the longer course looping around Princetown. For more details and an application form call 07775 657159.

The team of firefighters continues to undertake a range of charity events in aid of Cancer Research.

'Firefighters Fighting Cancer' have held events spreading over the previous four years, including fundraising cycle events, car washes, carnivals, raffles, endurance mountain bike rides and a challenging road ride open to all.

The team is made up of ten full and part-time firefighters based at fire stations around the service. The Cancer Research charity was selected by the team following its own traumas at the hands of the disease. The team sadly lost a colleague and fellow cyclist to cancer in 2005, as well as suffering the effects of other cancer-related illnesses to close family and friends.

Group manager Jon Miller said: 'The team are very dedicated and hope to raise as much money as possible to help in fighting cancer. We are looking to take the total raised so far from the current amount of £90,000 to over £100,000.'

Last year 365 cyclists took part in the event raising £25,000 for Cancer Research. Donations can be made by post to Cancer Research UK, Devon Fire and Rescue Service, Service HQ, Clyst St George, Exeter, EX3 0NW. Cheques should be made payable to Cancer Research UK.
