THE Tavistock Subscription Library, contrary to some opinion, is indeed open to all in Tavistock and anywhere else, who have an interest in Tavistock's historical heritage.

There are members from as far afield as York. For security reasons, however, prospective members must be sponsored before they can be given a key and hence 24-hour access to the library.

This historic facility has been preserved by the members through many difficult times. Most recently we survived temporary eviction for 18 months while Court Gate was being refurbished. We understood this was done by contractors funded jointly by Tavistock Town Council and English Heritage. Perhaps we were misinformed.

We only wish more Tavistock people would avail themselves of membership of the library. The annual membership subscription is less than the price of 50 cigarettes. Most of the fee goes to cover rates, rent and insurance, so that it is not a drain on the taxpayer. To our knowledge no one has been denied membership.

The Subscription Library committee has discussed the council's proposed move to Court Gate and appreciates their problem. We feel it should be possible to include the Subscription Library in any plans and would welcome discussion of ways forward with the council.

We also appreciate the sympathetic and helpful attitude to us shown by some of the councillors,

For those who have not visited the library, they are welcome to attend the next regular fundraising coffee morning which is being held in the library on Friday March 9 between 10am and noon.

Otherwise contact either John Gale (01822 890293) or me (01822 612546) to arrange a visit.
