CALLINGTON Community College?s £1.2 million state-of-the-art all weather sports pitch and pavilion was opened last Friday after two days of football fever involving over 2000 young people. Opened by former Plymouth Argyle player and manager Kevin Hodges, who unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion, the day was a double celebration as Callington Football Partnership was presented with its Community Charter Standard Award, only the seventh club in the County to achieve the award. Mid-field player from Plymouth Argyle Akos Buzaki made a guest appearance at the football talent academy signing autographs, answering questions and showing off his football skills. Youngsters from across North and East Cornwall took part in the academy, which was supported by coaches from the Football Association and Plymouth Argyle. Primary schools from the Callington area took part in a mini World Cup soccer tournament and staff at Callington played Liskeard and Looe Schools in a highly entertaining game, with Steve Kenning the headteacher demonstrating his football skills together with staff from many departments across the college. Callington won 2-1. The launch concluded with a corporate match between Ginsters and Radio Cornwall in which the former won 5-3.
