TWO Okehampton College students have been selected to represent Devon and the South West in the All England Athletics Championships in Sheffield tomorrow (Friday).

Year 11 student, Rebecca Chapman, who has just finished her GCSE's, was crowned South West Champion in the intermediate girls' 80m in 11.9 seconds hurdles, and beat county champions from eight other counties.

She also gained the silver medal in the 100m in a time of 12.3 seconds. Rebecca also secured the gold medal at the Multi Events championships and won five of the seven disciplines when competing in the heptathlon.

She gained the fourth highest score ever achieved by an intermediate girl in the history of the South West schools.

This tremendous achievement will now see Rebecca represent Devon in the All England Multi Events Championships, which are to be held in Bedford in September.

Year 9 student Josh Bush came third in the junior boys' high jump, with a best of 1m 69 cm, which saw Devon students capture the top three places in this discipline.

College principal Daryll Chapman said he was pleased two of the students will be representing the college at the national event.

He said: 'Athletics is very strong in the college.

'In the recent Exeter and East Devon Championships, the college won four of the seven trophies and came runners up in the other three competitions.

'It's great to see two students progress to this standard and I wish them all the very best for the national event. I hope their success inspires more students to follow in their footsteps.
