AUNE Head Arts opens an exhibition of Dartmoor sounds and words at the Exeter Phoenix on Wednesday October 16.
The Dartmoor Sensing exhibition includes a novel musical box created from materials found on the moor and containing a recording of the voice of a Dartmoor farmer talking about life on the moor during the foot and mouth crisis; Dartmoor stones which tell their own stories through ear trumpets, a whole sound environment contrasting the open moor with Dartmoor prison; and a series of photographs which inspired the project.
The exhibition has been created by ten young artists in collaboration with Devon-based sound artist Richard Povall and writer Clare Seal during a nine-day workshop on the Moor.
According to Richard Povall: ?The unifying factor of these three works is not just the inspiration of Dartmoor, but a response to the silence of the Dartmoor landscape. Each of the three works uses very small sounds. The works are intimate and seductive.?
The exhibition is at the Exeter Phoenix Galleries from Wednesday October 16 to Thursday November 7 and at Plymouth Arts Centre from March 8 to April 6 2003.
