AT the latest meeting of Okehampton Ladies' Probus Club last week, the chairman welcomed the daughter of Jessie Jones, who is visiting from Zimbabwe in Africa. Members heard reminiscences by Mrs Thoms entitled 'My years in Devon,' who shared stories of her early married life where she was employed as a librarian in Merton, London, followed by working in a jeweller's in Wimbledon. She and her husband moved to Devon, when he went to work in Tiverton. Mrs Thoms told members that they began their Devon life renting rooms in a farmhouse and with an increasing family bought a cottage near Bickleigh Mill. Mrs Thoms tried her hand at cream teas with some success. She said that when the children had grown up she worked as a librarian in Exeter. Members said that Mrs Thoms had so many anecdotes to tell that she was a real 'ray of sunshine' on a dull miserable Monday and would be welcomed back at later date to tell more.
