TAVISTOCK Athletic Club is publishing its 2004/05 development plan later this week. They are aiming to build upon the strong foundations already in place and have ambitions for taking the club further forward.

Despite the ?competition? with other, higher profile sports, membership across all the ages continues to grow with many new faces appearing around the club over the past few weeks.

In launching the development plan, new chairman Dan Bates predicted a bright future for the club in which facilities and coaching would be improved and recent success used as a platform for the next phase in the club?s history.

?We want to be a club which Tavistock can be proud of and which provides fun and fulfilment to all who come through our doors,? he said.

And things have already started to happen with seven members of the club attaining their UK Athletics level 1 coaching qualification last Saturday.

The club wants to create a comprehensive coaching structure for all sections with coaches qualified to lead smaller groups and, between them, offer the best possible coaching in every athletic event.

No better example of the vibrancy of the club could be found than at two events which took place last weekend. On Sunday, 50 juniors and seniors competed in Exeter in the second Devon League track and field meeting.

The club went into this meet already in the lead in the competition after a fine turnout at Braunton in May. The results are not available at present but there was more success on the track and in the field with some outstanding performances from both juniors and seniors.

On Saturday 16 seniors took part in the Duckponds 7K race in Plymstock. And some fantastic performances were delivered, none more so than Martin Exley?s fine second placing. There were six Tavistock athletes in the top 25 in a race with a field of just under 200. Fiona Dunn was first Tavistock lady home.
