TWELVE runners from Tavistock Athletic Club competed in last week's London Marathon. All had been training hard since the New Year, increasingly their mileage each weekend, running through rain, hail, snow and occasionally sunshine, aiming to build stamina and fitness to see them round the long miles.
First TAC member to the finish line was Andrew Valance, followed by Martin Exley, gaining 45th place in his age group, out of a total of 2,916 entrants.
Adam Holland, continuing his quest to gain a place in the Guinness Book of Records by being the youngest person to complete 100 marathons, was close behind, followed by Gavin Punchard.
Club chairman Allan Herdman was next home, gaining 39th place out of an entry of 933 in his Male 55 age category and setting a new club record, with TAC coach Tim Brooks close behind.
Special mention must be made of David Twine and Jemma Sharman, both running their first marathon, coached by Dotty Allan, who herself gained a Personal Best time in the race. In contrast, Pete Bazley and Ray Bennett are experienced marathoners, Ray having run more than 125 to date! Rebecca Sargent and Kirsty Trotter had both competed at London once before. It was an outstanding day for the club, and the unique atmosphere of the event made it a memorable experience for Tavistock athletes.
