ONE of the most picturesque bowling clubs in Devon, with probably one of the best greens is destined for closure. But Bere Alston Bowling Club members, pictured above, will continue on another site once funds have been raised for a new green and clubhouse. The club was at its present home at Bickham in Bere Alston for 20 years. But the lease will expire in ten years and cannot be renewed. The club has purchased two acres of land, which is a stone?s throw from the present site and has planning permission from the local council. Club captain Ken Bellchambers said: ?The solicitors have done their work and the land is now ours, all we need is the cash to create a new green and clubhouse. ?If anyone has £500,000 to spare we can put it to good use.? Plans for the new clubhouse include two indoor rinks to enable all year round bowling. The club is not just about bowling, it is open all year round and has many social activities which include short mat bowling, whist and bridge, race nights, quiz evenings, talks by local historians, musical evenings and much more. It is the social centre for many of the local residents. ?Fundraising is now the priority,? said Ken. ?It is a huge project so any new members that fancy a challenge will be very welcome.?
