THERE were 538 runners on the start-line for the first ever Tavy 13, a half-marathon race, run earlier this month, organised by Tavistock Athletic Club.
The 13.1 mile route took runners from the start at the Red and Black Club through the town, up to Chip Shop via Mill Hill and back down Crowndale Road for a final lap of the track at Tavistock College to finish. Members turned out in force to marshal, man water-stations, provide refreshments and generally assist to make the race a huge success.
Fourteen TACs ran the course and a real bonus for the day was that the race was won by club member Pete Freedman, setting an excellent course record, and finishing nearly six minutes in front of the next runner home, Cornwall AC's Noel Kindon.
The second TAC to finish was Alistair Morriss in 10th position overall, followed seconds later by Steve Groombridge, running strongly to win the male 55+ trophy. Wally Lake, Tony Shearer and Ann Woodhouse achieved good times, as did Pete Bazley finishing fifth in his M50+ group.
Three young runners, Rebecca Windermer, Reuben Grice and Laura Aspen were competing for the first time as seniors. All three ran strongly, with Rebecca finishing fifth senior female.
TAC times were: Peter Freedman 1 hour, 11 minutes, 27 seconds, Alistair Morriss 1.24.25, Steve Groombridge 1.24.52, Stephen Gokhale 1.30.47, Peter Bazley 1.37.31, Wally Lake 1.38.11, Rebecca Windermer 1.42.21, Reuben Grice 1.45.22, Kate Roue 1.49.46, Anthony Shearer 1.51.04, Laura Aspen 1.54.11, Timothy Heal 2.10.16, John Windermer 2.19.13, Ann Woodhouse 2.35.31.
The club is most grateful for all the help, support and donations it received. All proceeds are helping to reduce the £100,000 commitment the club has made towards funding the running track at Tavistock College.
