A PLANNING application, which attracted a 76-name opposition petition and the thumbs down from Okehampton Town Council, was this week deferred for a site meeting after councillors failed to resolve the issue.
The application is for the construction of three houses and two parking spaces at Lewis Court, off East Street.
The town council was concerned about access from the site onto the busy East Street and conflict between pedestrians and vehicles in the area ? the petition voiced similar concerns.
Principal planning officer Chris Watson said given the history of use of the site as a builder?s yard, approval of the application was recommended, but he requested a ?steer? from the committee on the question of parking.
The county highways officer has asked that no parking spaces should be included in the scheme, allowing more amenity use.
Cllr Jayne Hill proposed this amendment because she was concerned about cars driving in and out of the restricted access.
Cllr Dennis Bater felt there should be two houses and two parking spaces, while other members felt three parking spaces should be installed.
A site visit will take place before any further decision is taken.
