A WELL-supported foaling clinic was held at Collytown Stud, Bere Alston recently, raising money for Cancer Research UK.
The workshop was conducted by vets Paul Hallam and Lee Pritchard of Calweton Veterinary Group, to benefit those who have never foaled a mare before and those with more experience.
The morning began with an overview of pregnancy, gestation and the basics of foaling, including how to recognise a difficult birth, when to call for help and how to care for a new-born foal.
The group then moved into the stables to observe two pregnant miniature Shetland mares being scanned using an external abdominal scanner and to view first-hand the visible signs of imminent foaling.
This was followed by a demonstration of the Breeder Alert foaling alarm system and an example foaling kit showing everything that should be on hand when the time comes.
The visitors were then able to enjoy refreshments and meet the new-born foals and the other expectant mares.
The afternoon began with the drawing of a raffle, which contained several super prizes kindly donated by many major suppliers.
This was followed by the second informative talk of the day which covered weaning, worming, vaccinations and farriery.
The workshop was free of charge but donations and proceeds from the day totalled £134, which was added to a collection taken last month bringing the grand total to £349 raised by Collytown Stud and Calweton Veterinary Group in aid of Cancer Research UK.
