STREET cleaning and ground maintenance services scaled down in West Devon due to the foot and mouth crisis are to be reintroduced.

Restrictions on the services provided by the borough council were introduced to help reduce spread of the disease in the most heavily affected areas of West Devon.

Following stringent risk assessments in the parishes, services such as street cleaning, grass cutting and other ground maintenance work will be gradually started once more.

Jill Skelton, borough acting client manager, said precautions including twice-daily disinfection of all vehicles and machinery will continue.

She said: 'The council has been very conscious of achieving a balance between the level of service people wish to see continued in their local environment, and the danger of transmitting infection.

'As time goes on, the continued suspension of services can lead to its own problems and that, combined with the feedback we are receiving from residents, indicates that we would now begin a cautious resumption of services, taking all the precautions necessary.'
